Normally I’m not one for Miley Cyrus films. I have seen a couple and while I will say there are some that are okay, there are some that I figured weren’t exactly some of her strong suits. And this film is definitely on the list of “indifferent films” that I have seen. For those of you that haven’t even heard of it (and I wouldn’t blame you if you haven’t, it wasn’t really advertised and I don’t even think it was that popular.) it’s a re-make of a 2008 French comedy film of the similar name. It stars Miley Cyrus as a teenage girl going through the problems of life, at least whatever problems that teenagers go through. In which it usually revolves around one thing…
Relationships…
From that word alone, you should already be experiencing some flags of some sort. And all for good reason. The male/female relationships were ridiculously weak and the relationship between mother and daughter was equally confusing. It had me rolling my eyes and scoffing at every turn. And normally I’m not one to judge dysfunctional family relations. But I have no excuse for the male/female relationships. Cyrus and her boyfriend breakup at the beginning of the film because she catches him cheating on her, (big surprise). But then the guy turns around and starts harassing her because he’s jealous of her close friendship with her male best friend.
Uh… What???
I mean there’s jealousy and then there’s being a complete a-hole. Dude. You cheated on her. It was clear that you weren’t interested in her so why the sudden change? But that wasn’t what killed the film. She eventually gets together with her male best friend (again… Big surprise…) but then she suspects him of cheating on her with a girl she didn’t really like all that much, who is played by Ashley Greene. Okay, that has some potential. But one thing. She doesn’t really see him cheating on her. She see’s him walking by with Greene’s character hanging all over him, then gets verbal confirmation from a random person that he is in the bathroom when she is looking for him. But when she goes into the bathroom, she just see’s a purse laying on the floor in front of a stall, that looks coincidentally like Greene’s, along with noises from inside the stall and makes the assumption. And when she goes to confront Greene, Greene doesn’t deny it. However, earlier in the film it was mentioned that her closest friend played by, Ashley Hinshaw, has the exact same purse as the one that Greene’s character had. And to make it worse, Hinshaw’s character doesn’t even come right out and tell Cyrus that it was her in that stall having sex with a guy that Hinshaw didn’t really like all that much. Why? Because she wanted to not share the fact that she just had sex with a dork. This results in probably the weakest, and in my honest opinion the dumbest, dramatic scene that could have easily been avoided.
So what do I think of this film overall. As far as remakes go, this one is pretty bad. The interactions between Cyrus and her two best friends were okay and I did find certain times with the daughter and mother that were rather touching. But I wouldn’t exactly recommend taking the so called relationships that were in this film seriously. In fact I could see why this film may have not been so popular from the beginning.
